Orthokeratology has recently garnered greater attention and merits for the role of myopia management for children. Treatment outcomes, however, can sometimes be intriguing, or may derail from the way it was originally intended. This course is to illustrate and discuss five key considerations associated with orthokeratology for pediatric myopia care supported by evidence-based research and help clinicians recognize the nuances and optimize treatment success and patients’ satisfaction.

Objectives:
  • To understand that the clinical efficacy of orthokeratology is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ phenomenon
  • To illustrate combination treatments can be ‘additive’; yet not always synergistic
  • To debunk the notion of ‘Washout’ – when ‘washout’ isn’t entirely ‘washing out’
  • To familiarize with the potential of ‘Decentric’ ortho-k lens fit
  • To understand the roles of corneal biomechanics and association with axial length progression

Objectives:
  • Understand the importance of asphericity in normal corneas.
  • Learn how to create asphericity in normal corneas.
  • Understand the benefits of adding eccentricity to scleral lenses in improving vision for patients with corneal irregularities such as keratoconus.

Attendees will be presented a practical roadmap on clinical decisions and practice management and business logistics irrespective of their modality.

Objectives:
  • Learn tips on how to acquire a knowledge base and skill set to become a specialty contact lens expert, applicable skills independent of practice modality
  • Understand how to overcome challenges of building a specialty contact lens niche in both a private practice and medical academic setting.

We can’t “un-see” what we now know about the fate of the population with respect to myopia and what we as optometrists can do about it! In this course we battle it out I will provide for you the latest research and information and show you how to apply it into practice. We will review each treatment option of myopia management, the most current data available and how that impacts our decision-making process when prescribing in office. The controversy over the use of axial length for myopia management continues. This course will review the most current data and research on axial length acquisition, validity of instruments, purpose of use, and the pros and cons to implementation. How to calculate the expected axial length for your patient and how to incorporate the data in your decision -making process.

Objectives:
  • To understand the science and clinical application behind each form of myopia management treatment.
  • To learn how to make clinical decisions based on axial length data after collecting one data point and after a year of change.
  • To understand how to build your myopia management clinic with the help of tools, equipment, communication, and staff support.
